Exploring Distributed Generation

Distributed Generation (DG) refers to on-site solar systems, installed on a roof or ground-mounted, that generate electricity for immediate use at the location.

These systems operate “behind” the customer’s electrical meter, reducing reliance on the grid. People opt for DG solar for lower energy costs, environmental benefits, and energy independence.

Distributed Generation systems can vary in size, from small arrays powering homes or businesses to larger setups serving industrial facilities or other high-demand electricity users.

Goals & Considerations

Building your DG system

Your Energy Bill

Solar can help you lower your overall electricity bill. When your solar system is sized right for your typical electric usage, a customer will likely see savings.

How Long will you be there?

When considering Distributed Generation (DG), think about how long you plan to stay at your property. Evaluate the economic opportunity and commitment, including financing options. Pay close attention to the terms of your contract with the Approved Vendor, the REC contract, and any loan agreements.

Rooftop or Ground Mount?

Your Distributed Generation (DG) project’s location, whether rooftop or ground-mounted, depends on preferences, roof condition, terrain, permits, aesthetics, and costs.

Rooftop systems may be harder to install and impact your roof warranty but can save space and protect the roof from sun damage.
Ground-mounted systems may cost more and take up space but are easier to expand and maintain, and can capture more sunlight due to better positioning and airflow.

Each option offers unique benefits based on your needs.

The PV Vendor Practices

The solar panel installation process is a significant commitment, and it’s important that you feel comfortable and confident in both your decision and the team you choose to work with.

If you’re in Illinois, you have a few advantages to someone looking for Solar in Missouri. The Illinois Shines program vets solar vendors through a careful enrollment process, and requires vendors to provide Disclosure Forms to customers with critical project and cost information prior to contracting.

The Program provides resources and required information to participating vendors and designees to help ensure they comply with Program requirements, and provides consumer protections support to customers who believe a vendor may have violated program rules. Even with these safeguards, consumers should be careful when choosing which vendor to work with.

Looking at your Solar Bid

For every Illinois Shines Distributed Generation project, vendors must provide customers with a Disclosure Form. This form outlines key details such as total contract costs, required deposits and payments (for installation and maintenance), how much of the Illinois Shines incentive will be passed on to you, design specifications, estimated start and completion dates, system efficiency, and more. If you are working with a certified vendor you should also include terms for operations, maintenance, warranties, property transfer requirements, and estimated energy savings.

Depending on the vendor and contract type, cost and savings calculations may vary. The Disclosure Form uses a standardized format, making it easier to compare different vendors and financing options.

Participation in Illinois Shines does not limit your eligibility for other solar incentives and tax credits.

Asking the Right Questions

Before Going Solar

With many options available, it’s essential to ask the right questions when speaking with solar vendors. Select a category below to discover the key questions you should be asking.

DG Faqs
What Questions Should You Ask?
Illinois Shines incentivizes solar by requiring electric utilities to purchase Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) generated by participating solar projects. While the incentive payments go directly to the vendors, they can pass along these benefits to you in various ways:

  • Lower Project Costs: Vendors may use the incentive to reduce the overall purchase or lease price of your Distributed Generation (DG) project.
  • Reduced Monthly Costs: For Community Solar (CS) subscriptions, the incentive could help lower your monthly energy bills

It’s important to explore multiple offers and understand the terms of any contract before making a decision. We encourage you to compare vendors and ensure you’re fully aware of how incentives impact your potential savings. If you need help understanding or have any additional questions. Please reach out to us today.

What are some similar projects you've done?

When considering a solar company, it’s essential to see their previous work to ensure they have experience with projects like yours. At ARC, we’ve successfully completed various DG installations for residential, commercial, and industrial clients across Illinois and Missouri. From small rooftop systems to large-scale ground-mounted projects, we can provide examples that match your needs and project scope.

How are Renewable Energy Credit (REC) payments processed and managed, and what should I know about them??

Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) represent the environmental benefits of generating renewable energy. For Distributed Generation (DG) systems, RECs are created as your system produces clean energy. In Illinois, RECs are a critical part of programs like Illinois Shines, where utilities are required to purchase RECs from solar projects.

At ARC we manage the entire process for our clients:

  • Vendors Handle the Payments: RECs are sold to the utility companies, and the payments typically go directly to the solar vendor. As a customer, you won’t need to worry about navigating the complexities of the REC market.
  • Incentive Passed to You: Depending on your contract, ARC ensures that a portion of the REC payments can be passed on to you, either by reducing the upfront cost of the system or lowering ongoing payments, such as in the case of leases or Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs).
  • Transparent Reporting: We believe in full transparency. You'll know exactly how REC payments are applied to your project, and we provide clear documentation so you can see how these incentives contribute to your overall savings.

Before signing a contract, it’s important to understand how REC payments affect your costs and savings. ARC will guide you through the details, ensuring that you get the maximum benefit from the program.

Can I add energy storage to my solar system?

At ARC, we offer energy storage solutions to help you get the most out of your solar system by storing excess energy for use during power outages or at night. Adding a battery system ensures you have more control over your energy usage and can further reduce your reliance on the grid. Our energy storage systems are designed to work seamlessly with the solar panels we install, providing enhanced efficiency and backup power.

However, it’s important to note that energy storage is not currently eligible for incentives under the Illinois Solar for All (ILSFA) program. While the ILSFA program covers solar installation costs, it does not include energy storage as part of its incentives.

If you’re interested in learning more about energy storage options outside of ILSFA, we’re happy to discuss how it can complement your solar system and explore other available incentives or financing options.

What happens if I sell my property or move?

If you move or sell your property, your solar system can be transferred to the new owner, adding value to your home. Here’s what to consider:

  • Seamless Transfer: Solar systems can increase property value, and transferring ownership is straightforward. We assist with the necessary paperwork to ensure the new owner continues benefiting from the system, including warranties and ongoing maintenance.
  • Loan or Lease Considerations: If your system is financed through a loan or lease, you'll need to review your contract terms. ARC can help facilitate a transfer of the agreement to the new homeowner, or explore buyout options if needed.
  • Maximizing Home Value: Homes with solar systems are often more attractive to buyers due to the potential for lower energy bills and sustainable living. Highlighting the system as part of your home’s sale can be a significant selling point.

We’ll support you through the transfer process to ensure it’s as smooth and simple as possible, so you can sell or move without worry.

What happens to my solar contract if I need to transfer it to someone else?

If you need to transfer ownership of your solar system, either because you’re moving or selling your property, your solar contract can be assigned to the new owner. Here’s what to keep in mind:

  • Simple Transfer Process: ARC facilitates the assignment of your contract to the new property owner. This ensures that the new owner takes over the remaining terms of the contract, including any financing, warranties, or service agreements.
  • Loan or Lease Transfers: If your system is financed through a loan or lease, we’ll work with you and the new homeowner to ensure a smooth transfer of the financial obligations. This may include the option to buy out the lease or adjust the loan terms if needed.
  • Warranties and Maintenance: All warranties and ongoing maintenance agreements are transferred with the contract, ensuring the new owner benefits from the same long-term protection and service.

By assigning the contract, you ensure the system stays operational and the new owner continues to enjoy the benefits of solar, without interrupting your move or sale. We’re here to make the transition seamless.
